Giants hire Bochy: Mediocrity continued

Botch(y)ed

n. Definition.
1. The art of plugging a hole.
2. The world's worst philosophy.

Learn to love it Giants fans. It looks like we've got another era of sub par baseball, or at least for the next three years. The Giants will formally announce this afternoon that Bruce Bochy has signed a three year deal for an estimated 6 to 7 million.

Somehow Magowan continutes to allow Sabean to follow the same path over and over again. Forced once again into hiring a manager whose managing experience made him a top candidate, Sabean has chosen to look at the two N.L. pennants of the past two seasons as opposed to the fact that Bruce Bochy has a career record under .500 (951-975) and a notoriously poor rap for managing in the playoffs.

As Giants fans know, this sort of move is not new.

I can imagine what Brian Sabean might do if he hadn't had the monetary success he has had in baseball. Rolling around in his '94 Accord trying to save some money, Sabes would have been sure to have a problem or two with his ride. He's a loyal guy so it would be likely that he went to the same shop every year with some new problem.

The handyman, a loyal friend, would say to him, "Hey Brian, every year you come back with something new that is wrong with this car. Last year the breaks, two years ago the exhaust and now, the bleed valve is out. With all the money you've spent, you might as well just get a new car".

Without a second thought, Sabean would look at his friend with a grin and say, "Why throw it out when you can patch it up--good as new".

Bruce Bochy is the new breaks. He makes the car driveable but the handyman knows like everyone else, soon enough it will break again. The former Padres manager has not seen real success since 1998, the last N.L. pennant he won in an actual competitive division.

The truth is, Brian Sabean simply lacks the courage to buy a new car. Longtime Giants bench coach Ron Wotus and the highly respected Bud Black, who has a World Series ring to his resume, were more than viable choices. They could have been the face of the new younger Giants that we are constantly reminded of by management.

This was Sabean's opportunity to start fresh and get out from the strangle of mediocrity. Instead, he hired its poster boy.

Clever. The Giants are rebuilding so you have to cut them some slack. There is still a lot of offseason left. Lets wait and see who Sabean signs before burning him at the stake.

Would loved to have seen Wotus, but more important than who they stick in the managerial hot seat is who they throw on the field. I have no doubt that Bochy could manage a team if there was actual talent on the field. One plus for Bochy...players love him. It may be a smart move after all to lure some of the free agents to sign with us.

Come on, let's analyze this a bit before we rush to conclusions.

1. Giants have alot of open positions that some, if not most, will need to be filled by free agents.

2. Wotus and Black, in terms of mangagerial experience, are unknowns and unproven.

3. Bochy is a known commodity, very highly respected and popular with players - he will be a very good selling point in attracting key free agents. He will also command respect from veterans as well. A rookie manager would have to earn this over time and with so much flux in the roster, this could have led to disaster in the clubhouse.

4. Bochy is a two time mgr of the year and has led some pretty mediocre teams to division winners - that doesn't sound like a mediocre mgr to me.

5. Bochy is a sign to me that the Giants are not in a total rebuilding mode - he's here to win ... this sends a positive tone to players and fans.

let's have some positive vibes for a change.

Sabean has done it again...made a move that made headlines! Bochy is a great pick up! He has the experience and expertise to lead a young team! He knows the division inside and out! He is respected throughout the league and with him as manager of the all star team ov erseas...that puts him right next to potential big name free agents that maybe, just maybe we could land to make this team a winning team again!

The 'Alou' era or 'error' is gone and the Bochy era has just begun! Lets lay off Sabean who put together some awesome teams and kept us a winning club for 8 years in a row thats something no other team in our division has been able to do! Sabean has seen losing and knows the old "fixing pot hole" idea isn't working no more and we need youth, health and speed!

I want to see a winning team, a championship caliber team and I believe with our resources and Bochy keen management prowless we will be above 500 team and in the playoff, especially what looks to be another weak division!

San Diego needs offense and doesn't have the resources. Arizona needs pitching, but it too doesn't really have the resources either! The Dodgers have the money and the best opurtunity to make it, but they are the new...old Giants...plugging old veterans in their holes like we once did! Oh and the Rockies have been young for a long time...rebuilding for a long time...they need management all the way from the top down! It's the Giants for the taking if Sabean gets the right free agents to fill the holes...what an off season we will have as Giants fans!

I don't know what to think about Bochy. I keep hearing the fact that he's taken the padres to the playoffs, but especially last year winning the west isn't something to brag about. If they wanted someone who is a proven winner, someone like Hillman would have been better.
